Untreated Depression
It is normal to feel “down in the dumps” or “blue” once in a while. In fact, it would not be normal if you never felt that way. However, there is a point when depression goes past what is considered normal. Then, it is a serious problem that requires treatment.
Unfortunately, not nearly enough people actually seek treatment for their depression. This is often because they don’t realize what the effects of untreated depression are. Obviously, the biggest danger is even deeper depression that can lead to suicide. Depression also prevents one from living their life to the fullest. But there are physical effects from untreated depression as well.
Those who suffer from untreated depression are opening themselves up to other health problems. When the mind is stressed, the body’s immune system does not function properly. Depression, in itself, is a form of stress as far as the brain is concerned. Not only will you be opening yourself up to illness, but you will also find that you have trouble getting over illnesses as well.

Sleep deprivation is another concern. This, of course, brings on other health concerns. The fact is that the human body actually requires rest. It isn’t just a matter of being sleepy — it is a matter of recharging the body and the mind. As sleep deprivation continues, not only is the body going to start shutting down and malfunctioning, but you will find that the depression gets even worse.
Finally, many people who do not seek professional treatment for depression self-medicate. This is not a situation in which the person thinks that they are depressed and will treat it with illegal drugs or alcohol. In fact, they don’t realize what is compelling them to use the drugs or alcohol. All they know is that they feel “better” when they have the drugs or booze, and this leads them to seek these things out when the depression sets in.
Depression does not have the stigma that it once did. These days, it is perfectly acceptable to suffer from depression — and to seek counseling for it. Nobody is going to think less of you for it — and this seems to be one of the big reasons why treatment is not obtained.
